Fair, Female, Fat, Fertile, Forty, and Family History

** Include Family History to make it 6 or replace Forty with Family History. That makes it more accurate.

This mnemonic summarizes the major risk factors for developing gall stones (cholelithiasis).

fair: more prevalent in the Caucasian and Hispanic population
female gender
fat: Obesity (BMI >30)
fertile: one or more children. Pregnancy is a risk factor for biliary colic and cholecystitis.
forty: age ≥40cholelithiasis can occur in young patients with a positive family history; in such cases, the ‘familial’ factor can substitute the ‘forty’ factor

Other risk factors for gall stones include weight loss and liver transplant patients.
