Definition: Androgenetic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss in both men and women. It is a normal physiologic variant. In men, this condition is also known as male-pattern baldness. In women, this form of hair loss is associated with an increased risk of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Diagnosis
H&P
Hair loss occurs in a sex-specific pattern. Men and women each have specific patterns of androgenetic hair loss.

Treatment
Topical Minoxidil and oral finasteride are the only treatments currently FDA approved for treating androgenetic alopecia.
Men:
Topical minoxidil (2% or 5% solution) for men
Finasteride 1mg PO daily. Only for men.
Women:
Topical Minoxidil 2% solution for women.

For both of these medicines, if you stop treatment, the baldness returns and any gains are reversed.
