Statin Use for Primary Prevention of ASCVD, USPSTF Recommendations.

The 2013 ACC/AHA cholesterol guidelines

According to the ACC/AHA, there are 4 major groups are in whom statin therapy is indicated:
(1) individuals with clinical atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD),
(2) those with primary elevations of LDL-C >190 mg/dL,
(3) patients age 40–75 with diabetes mellitus, an LDL-C level of 70–189 mg/dL, and no clinical ASCVD,
(4) patients age 40–75 without clinical ASCVD or diabetes, an LDL-C level of 70–189 mg/dL, and an estimated 10-year ASCVD risk >7.5%.

For patients who are age 40–75 with diabetes, an LDL-C level of 70–189 mg/dL, and no clinical ASCVD, a moderate-intensity statin is recommended.
