Week 1: Offer both breasts at each feeding. This will help bring in your milk supply. Do 10 minutes on the first breast, then switch to the second breast if your baby is still hungry. Alternate the breast you start on. You may need to stimulate your baby to suck on the second breast. That is normal.

After milk supply has come in (by day 8 latest): Encourage baby to nurse as long as he wants on the first breast (up to 20 mins). This will allow him to get the high-fat, calorie-rich hindmilk. After the baby is done eating on the first breast and it’s no longer flowing or 20 minutes has elapsed, then give him the second breast if he is still interested. Alternate the breast you start with at each feeding.

Breastfeed 20-45+ minutes per feed, regardless of age.
