Evaluate patient for “red flags” that may suggest the presence of an underlying GI organic disorder.

Important red flags include:

  • Abdominal pain,
  • Cramping,
  • Nausea/vomiting,
  • Weight loss,
  • Melena, rectal bleeding,
  • Rectal pain,
  • Fever.
