May start solid foods after 4-6 months. However, the best time to start solid foods depends not only on your child’s age, but also on your child’s ability to sit up, support his or her head, and meet other developmental milestones.
4-6 months old: Start with iron-fortified cereals (four tablespoons/serving, one serving per day.
6-9 months old: Add pureed fruits/veggies 4 tablespoons/serving, two to three servings per day. Avoid strawberries and citrus until older.
Older than 9 months: Add meats, chicken, and small amounts of cottage cheese/yogurt, egg yolks three to four servings per day.
– Introduce one food at a time.
– Avoid honey until 12 months or older because of the potential risk of exposure to a harmful bacteria toxin (botulism poisoning).
– Avoid hard, round foods that could cause choking (e.g., nuts, grapes, raw carrots, or candies) until kids are much older.
