Diagnosis
Per NCEP ATP III criteria for Metabolic Syndrome. Patient must meet ≥3 of 5 criteria.
Treatment
-Aggressive lifestyle intervention (weight loss, physical activity, smoking cessation) to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and CVD.
-Diet: Mediterranean diet ( high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and olive oil) and DASH diet. Recommend foods with low glycemic index and a high fiber diet content.
-Nutritionist referral for further and support. Recommend Weight Watchers or a similarly structured plan if insurance will pay for it / patient can afford it.
-Motivational Interviewing (MI) – MI has been shown to have a positive influence on weight loss independent of a patient’s stage of change. MI initiated today. Will refer to a psychologist for continued MI.
-Exercise: At least 150 mins/week of moderate intensity exercise or 75 mins of high-intensity exercise recommended. Daily exercise preferred.
-10-year risk for CVD via Framingham Risk Score or Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) is ____
-Treat hypertension.
-Treat hyperlipidemia.
-Treat prediabetes/diabetes. Consider Metformin.
