-Sleepiness, Cataplexy.
-Some patients may also have vivid hallucinations when falling asleep or waking up.
Treatment
-Improve nighttime sleep (both quality & quantity). Sleep hygiene + Sodium oxybate. These improve daytime alertness and cataplexy.
-Scheduled daytime naps.
-Pharmacotherapy: Stimulants e.g. methylphenidate – improves daytime function.

 

Cataplexy = An episode of sudden loss of muscle tone and strength, usually associated with an emotional stimulus, like laughing. Cataplexy is pathognomonic for Narcolepsy.
