5 Indications for urgent dialysis (when condition refractory to conventional therapy)

  • Acid-base disturbance: acidemia e.g. Severe metabolic acidosis (pH <7.1)
  • Electrolyte disorder: usually  hyperkalemia; sometimes  hypercalcemia, tumor lysis
  • Intoxication: methanol, ethylene glycol, lithium, salicylates.
  • Overload of volume (CHF); fluid overload
  • Uremia: signs of uremia such as pericarditis, bleeding, encephalopathy (an otherwise unexplained decline in mental status)
