ROM: Flexion & Extension; Adduction & Abduction; Rotation (Int. & Ext).

Anterior Muscles of the thigh: Flexors of the Hip Joint

Illiopsoas

  • Psoas Major (Proximal attachment: Sides of T12-L5; Distal Attachment: Lesser trochanter of the femur)
  • Psoas Minor (Proximal attachment: Sides of T12-L1; Distal Attachment: Tendon of Psoas major which attaches to the lesser trochanter of the femur)
  • Illicus

Pectineus

Sartorius

Muscles of the Posterior thigh: Extensors of the Hip, Flexors of the Knee

The hamstrings

  • Biceps femoris
  • Semitendinosus
  • Semimembranosus

The proximal attachment of all three muscles is the ischia tuberosity.

Muscles of the Medial Thigh: Adductors of the Thigh

  • Adductor Longus
  • Adductor Brevis
  • Adductor Magnus
  • Gracilis

Muscles of the Gluteal Region: Abductors and Rotators of the Thigh

Must abductors insert on the greater trochanter of the femur (different places on it)

Muscles that abduct the thigh (and attach to the greater trochanter of the femur)

  • Gluteus Medius
  • Gluteus Minimus
  • Piriformis
  • Obturator Internus
  • Superior and inferior gemelli

Tensor of fascia lata also adducts the thigh but doesn’t attach to the greater trochanter of the femur.
