According to the current criteria of the ADA, the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus should be made if any one of the following criteria is met:

  1. Hemoglobin A1c ≥6.5%
  2. Fasting plasma glucose ≥126 mg/dL
  3. 2-hour post-load plasma glucose ≥200 mg/dL on oral glucose tolerance testing
  4. A random plasma glucose ≥200 mg/dL in a patient with symptoms of diabetes. i.e. random glucose ≥200 mg/dL PLUS symptomatic patient.

If hyperglycemia is not unequivocal, results require confirmation by repeat testing.
