How to Estimate Glucose Level From a Hemoglobin A1C

126 blood sugar = Diabetes = A1C of 6.5

For every 1 unit of A1C above 6.5, that equals 30 units of blood sugar.

That means a hemoglobin of 9.5 would be translated into a sugar of (30 x 3) + 126 = 90 + 126 = 216

For ease of calculation, you can diagnose diabetes above as a blood sugar of 130 instead of 126 and then go from there.

A good calculator from the American Diabetes Association.

i.e. You diagnose diabetes by having a fasting blood sugar or 126 or more; An A1C of 6.5 or higher; or random glucose of 200.

Note that somehow 200 divided by 6.5 equals about 30.

When we are trying to gauge what a person’s sugar is, we are really trying to gauge what their average random sugar would be, not necessarily what their fasting sugar is.
